How to find a stud in a wall (and in a block house)
Magnetic, electronic and radar stud finders compared, plus the knuckle and outlet-box tricks, and why stud finders lie in South Florida concrete block homes.

Finding a stud is easy in a wood-framed house and genuinely tricky in a block one. South Florida is mostly block. That mismatch is why so many people here drill a confident hole into what a $30 stud finder told them was solid framing and end up holding a mirror that will not stay on the wall.
Here is how each method actually works, how to confirm before you commit, and the local caveat that matters more than everything else on this page.
What you are actually looking for
In wood framing, a stud is a vertical 2x4 or 2x6. It is nominally 2 inches wide but really about 1 1/2 inches, so your target is narrow. Studs run floor to ceiling at a regular spacing, with extras doubled up at door and window openings, at corners, and wherever two walls meet.
Standard spacing is 16 inches on center. Some newer construction and non-load-bearing partitions use 24 inches on center. Metal-framed walls, common in commercial buildings and some condos, use light-gauge steel studs at 16 or 24 inches — a magnet will find the screws in these easily, and the steel itself, but steel studs are hollow and hold screws far worse than wood.
The tools, and what each one is good for
Magnetic stud finders
A rare-earth magnet in a small housing. It does not find the wood, it finds the drywall screws or nails that hold the board to the wood. That is the beauty of it: a hit is not an inference, it is a fastener, and fasteners are in framing. The downside is that you have to sweep the wall in a slow zigzag until you catch one. Cheap, no batteries, never wrong. My favorite confirmation tool.
Electronic (capacitive) stud finders
The common ones. They sense a change in density behind the surface. You calibrate on a hollow section, slide it sideways, and it lights up when the reading shifts. Fast and effective in ordinary drywall over wood.
They are also easy to fool. Heavy texture, a double layer of board, foil-faced insulation, a hidden pipe, a duct, a bundle of low-voltage cable, damp board, or your own hand pressure will all produce false hits. If you are getting a positive reading over a 6-inch-wide band, that is not a 1 1/2-inch stud.
Radar and multi-sensor scanners
The higher-end scanners use radar rather than simple capacitance, and they can distinguish wood from metal from live wiring, and give an approximate depth. They handle thicker and layered walls far better. They cost real money and they still need careful calibration, but if you own a house with unusual walls they earn their keep.
The knuckle test
Rap the wall with a knuckle and listen. Between studs the sound is hollow and slightly resonant. Over a stud it is dull and tight. This works better than people expect, and it works especially well as a sanity check on a scanner reading. It works poorly on thick or textured walls, and it tells you nothing about furring strips.
The outlet box trick
This is the fastest reliable method in a wood-framed house. Kill the breaker, take the cover plate off a receptacle or switch, and look at the box. Standard boxes are nailed or screwed to the side of a stud during rough-in, so one vertical edge of that box is sitting against framing. Note which side, measure out from there in 16-inch increments, and you have a working map of the wall. Put the plate back on before you get distracted.
Do not stick anything into the box. You are looking, not probing.

The Florida caveat: furring strips are not studs
This is the part that costs people mirrors and TVs.
Most single-family homes and low-rise buildings in Broward, Palm Beach and north Miami-Dade are built from concrete masonry units — block — with a stucco exterior. On the inside face of that block, the builder fastens thin wood strips, usually 1x2 or 1x3, called furring strips. Sometimes they are metal hat channel instead. Drywall gets screwed to those strips. The strips exist to create a flat surface, hold the board and leave a small gap for insulation. They are structurally trivial.
They are typically fastened to the block with cut nails, masonry nails or concrete screws every foot or two, and they are commonly spaced 16 or 24 inches apart — exactly the spacing your stud finder is looking for.
So the tool beeps, the spacing is right, everything feels normal, and you drive a 3-inch lag screw into a 3/4-inch-thick strip of pine that is itself hanging off a masonry nail. The screw bottoms out on concrete or splits the strip. A furring strip will hold a picture. It will not hold a mirror, a shelf or a television.
How to tell which kind of wall you have. Exterior walls of a block house are block. Interior partition walls in the same house are usually conventional wood or metal framing and behave normally. Knock on the wall: block reads dead and solid all the way along, with no hollow bays between hits. Drill a test hole and look at the dust — wood shavings mean framing, gray powder means you are into concrete or block. Older two-story homes often have block on the ground floor and wood framing upstairs, so do not assume the whole house matches.

Step by step: find and confirm a stud
- Pick your rough height first. Scan at the height you actually intend to fasten. Studs are vertical, but pipes, ducts and blocking are not, so a clean reading at 5 feet does not guarantee a clean reading at 3 feet.
- Clear and calibrate. Take pictures and shelves off the wall. Calibrate the electronic finder on a spot you believe is hollow, holding it flat with light, even pressure.
- Sweep slowly and horizontally. Move about an inch per second. Mark both edges of every hit with light pencil, not just the center.
- Sanity-check the width. A wood stud edge-to-edge should be about 1 1/2 inches. Anything much wider is two studs, a pipe, or a false reading.
- Confirm with a magnet. Sweep the magnet vertically over your mark. Screws are typically every 12 to 16 inches up the stud, so if you have a real stud you should find more than one.
- Check the neighbors. Measure 16 inches left and right and scan again. Real framing produces a rhythm. A one-off hit with nothing at 16 or 24 inches either side is suspicious.
- Prove it with a pilot hole. Drill a 1/16-inch hole in the exact spot you intend to fasten. Firm resistance and wood dust means you are in. Free travel into a void means you missed. Bend a small hook in a piece of stiff wire, poke it in, and rotate it to feel where the stud edge actually is.
- Fill the pilot hole if you missed. A dab of lightweight compound and a fingertip. Nobody will ever find it.
Safety: what else lives in that wall
Wiring runs vertically up stud bays and horizontally through drilled holes in the framing, usually within a foot or so of the boxes. Water supply lines, drain stacks and low-voltage cable share the same cavities. Never drill directly above or below an outlet, switch, or plumbing fixture without scanning first, and treat any metal reading as a reason to move rather than push harder.
If you hit something you cannot identify, stop. A 1/16-inch pilot hole into a cable is a bad afternoon. A 1/2-inch toggle hole into a cable is an emergency.
When it’s worth calling someone
If your scanner is giving you nonsense, if the wall is block and you need real holding power, or if you are about to hang something you cannot afford to drop, it is worth having someone with a hammer drill and a proper scanner do it. How far apart are studs in a wall?
Wood studs are normally 16 inches on center, and sometimes 24 inches on center in newer or non-load-bearing walls. On center means from the middle of one stud to the middle of the next, so once you find one reliably you can measure across to predict the rest. Doors, windows and corners break the rhythm, so always confirm rather than assume.
Why does my stud finder beep everywhere?
Usually because the wall is not what the tool expects. Density-sensing stud finders get confused by thick texture, wallpaper, a second layer of drywall, foam insulation board, metal furring, or plumbing and wiring in the cavity. Recalibrate on a spot you are confident is empty, scan slowly, and cross-check with a magnet before you drill.
Do Florida concrete block homes have studs?
Exterior block walls have no studs. They have thin wood or metal furring strips fastened to the face of the block with drywall over them, and a stud finder will happily flag those strips as studs. A furring strip is typically a 1x2 or 1x3 nailed to masonry and it holds very little on its own. Interior partition walls in the same house are often normal wood framing.
How do I find a stud without a stud finder?
Take the cover plate off a nearby outlet or switch. The box is almost always nailed to the side of a stud, so the stud runs along one edge of that box. Measure 16-inch increments out from there and tap the wall with a knuckle, listening for the dull thud that replaces the hollow sound.
Are magnetic stud finders better than electronic ones?
They are better at confirming, not at searching. A magnet finds the actual screws and nails in the framing, so a hit is real, but you have to sweep the whole wall to find them. Electronic finders cover ground faster but infer density and can be fooled. Search with an electronic finder, then prove it with a magnet.
How can I be sure I found a stud before I drill a big hole?
Drill a 1/16-inch pilot hole where you think the stud is. If it goes in about half an inch and then meets firm resistance that produces wood shavings, you are in framing. If it pushes through into empty space, you missed. A pilot hole is a pinhole you can fill with a dab of compound in ten seconds.
