Mounting a TV above a fireplace: read this first
Mounting a TV above a fireplace: how to test the heat, why the viewing angle hurts your neck, mantel clearance, pull-down mounts, and when the answer should be no.
Almost every week somebody asks me to put a television above a fireplace, and almost every week I say the same thing: I can do it, here is what it costs you, and here is the test we should run first. It is not that it can never work. It is that people decide it is happening before anyone has checked whether it should.
Two problems, one of which damages the TV slowly and one of which damages your evening immediately. Both are measurable. So measure them.
Problem one: heat
Televisions have a maximum ambient operating temperature, and it is lower than people assume. Check your own manual — manufacturers commonly specify a figure somewhere in the 95 to 104 degree Fahrenheit range, and it varies by brand and by panel type. That is the temperature of the air the TV is sitting in, not the temperature you find comfortable.
A fireplace does two things to the wall above it. It sends a column of hot air straight up the face, and it soaks heat into the masonry, which then radiates for hours after the fire is out. Even a modest gas log set puts a plume of warm air across the mantel and up the wall.
What heat does to a TV is not usually dramatic. Panels do not melt. What happens is that the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply, the adhesives holding the panel stack together and the diffuser films inside an LCD all age faster when they run hot. You get a screen that develops uneven backlighting, a power board that starts failing to boot, or a panel with a warm band across the top — two or three years earlier than it otherwise would have. It never gets diagnosed as a heat problem, because by then nobody connects it to the fireplace.
In South Florida, the risk varies more than most places. A lot of “fireplaces” here are decorative electric inserts that produce little heat, or gas log sets in a builder-grade box that get used twice a year at Christmas. Those are much lower risk. But note that many electric fireplaces vent their warm air out of a grille along the top front of the unit — straight up the wall, right where the TV goes. Do not assume electric means cool.
How to test it properly
Do this before you buy the mount.
- Run the fireplace at its maximum setting for at least 45 to 60 minutes. Not five minutes. The wall mass takes a long time to come up to temperature, and the peak reading is well after ignition.
- Keep the room in its normal state — doors, ceiling fan and air conditioning as they usually are. If you would run the fireplace with the AC on, run it with the AC on.
- Tape a simple air thermometer to the wall at the height the center of the TV would sit, standing it off the surface an inch or so with a folded card so it reads air rather than wall.
- Take surface readings with an infrared thermometer at the mantel, at the bottom of the proposed TV location, at the center and at the top. Note that an IR gun reads a surface, and the TV cares about the air it breathes, so the stick-on thermometer is the more relevant number. Use the IR readings to map where the hot spots are.
- Read again 30 minutes after you shut the fire off. Masonry keeps giving heat back, and that stored heat is what a TV sits in all evening.
- Compare with your TV’s rating. If you are within about 10 degrees of the maximum operating ambient, treat that as a no. Specifications are limits, not targets.
If the numbers are marginal, a mantel shelf that projects further out deflects the plume away from the wall and genuinely helps. So does a heat shield. Neither turns a bad reading into a good one, but they can turn a borderline one.
Problem two: your neck
The geometry is unforgiving. A typical mantel sits 48 to 54 inches off the floor. Put the bottom of a 65 inch TV a few inches above that and the center of the screen lands somewhere around 75 to 80 inches — a good three feet above seated eye level.
The widely used guideline is that the center of the screen should be no more than about 15 degrees above your seated eye level. Because that is an angle, the height it allows depends on how far back you sit:

Measure your mantel, add a few inches of clearance, add half your screen height, and compare. In most living rooms with a standard mantel and a 65 or 75 inch TV, the answer comes out over the limit — sometimes well over.
This is not a matter of taste. Holding your head tilted back for two hours loads the neck extensors continuously, and people describe it as “the TV is fine, I just get a headache watching movies.” There is more on the arithmetic in how high to mount a TV.
There is also a picture-quality cost. Many LCD panels lose contrast and shift color badly when viewed from well below center. A tilting mount aimed at your face recovers a lot of that, and is the minimum you should accept for any above-fireplace install.
Mantel and combustible clearance
For a masonry fireplace, the International Residential Code sets clearances for combustible material around the opening: nothing combustible within 6 inches of the fireplace opening, and combustible material within 12 inches of the opening may not project more than 1/8 inch for each inch of distance from the opening. That is what governs how deep a mantel shelf can be and how low it can sit.
For a factory-built or gas fireplace, the governing document is the manufacturer’s listed installation instructions, not a general rule. Read them. Many gas units specify a maximum mantel projection at a given height, a minimum clearance to combustibles above the opening, and some explicitly address televisions or require a specific heat management kit. Ignoring a listed clearance on a gas appliance is both a safety issue and an insurance issue.
Your TV is not, strictly speaking, “combustible trim.” But the clearance zones tell you where the heat is expected to be, and that information is exactly what you need.
Anchoring into a fireplace wall
The wall above a fireplace is rarely ordinary drywall on studs, which is a good thing structurally and an awkward thing practically.
- Solid masonry or block. Best case. Use masonry sleeve anchors with proper embedment and a hammer drill. Details in mounting a TV on a concrete block wall.
- Stone, tile or manufactured stone veneer. The veneer is a finish over a mortar bed and lath. It holds nothing. Your anchors must pass through it and reach the structure behind, which means longer fasteners and accounting for the veneer thickness in your embedment calculation. Drill the veneer slowly, without hammer, until you are through it, then switch to hammer for the masonry. Start with a small pilot to stop the bit wandering and cracking the face. If a stone cracks, it is not a patch, it is a mason.
- Framed chase with drywall. Common on modern gas fireplaces. Standard stud rules apply, but check for headers, framing around the firebox and metal chase members. See how to find a stud.
- Never anchor to the mantel shelf itself. It is trim.
If you are hanging a pull-down mount, the structural bar is much higher again. These mechanisms are heavy before the TV goes on, they apply dynamic loads every time someone pulls the screen down, and manufacturers typically specify anchoring into two adjacent studs, a substantial plywood backer, or heavy masonry anchors. Read the requirement before you buy the mount, not after.
Power and signal
This is where above-fireplace installs quietly become expensive.
There is usually no receptacle above a fireplace. The chase behind a masonry fireplace is often solid, or occupied by the flue, so there is nothing to fish through. And you cannot solve it by pushing the TV’s power cord down through the wall — a flexible cord is not permitted to be run through holes in walls or used as a substitute for fixed wiring, and its jacket carries no in-wall fire rating.
Realistic options:
- Paintable surface raceway down the side of the chimney breast, painted to match. Unglamorous and effective, and it is often the only option on solid masonry.
- A licensed electrician adding a receptacle in the wall above. In Florida, new circuits and permanent wiring are licensed work.
- A listed recessed power kit, but only where there is a genuine framed cavity with a clear path. Check before you commit.
Signal cable follows the same logic: CL2 or CL3 in-wall rated cable where there is a cavity, raceway where there isn’t, and always a generous service loop if the mount pulls down — the TV travels a long way and a taut HDMI cable will not survive it. One more: a wood-burning fireplace produces soot, and soot gets into a TV’s ventilation slots and onto the panel. If yours actually burns wood, that alone is a reason to put the TV somewhere else.
Safety and when to say no
Say no, or move the TV, if any of these are true:
- The measured air temperature at the TV location approaches or exceeds the maximum operating ambient in your TV’s manual.
- The fireplace manufacturer’s instructions specify a clearance or restriction the install would violate.
- The screen center would sit well outside the 15 degree limit for your seating distance and you are not using a pull-down mount.
- The wall is thin veneer with no reachable structure behind it.
- You burn actual wood in it regularly.
- You cannot get power up there without running a cord through a wall.
- The mount you want is a pull-down and you cannot verify what is behind the wall.
None of these are me being difficult. Each of them is a specific failure mode with a specific cost.
And the honest recommendation: if there is any other wall in the room with a decent sight line, use it. An above-fireplace TV is a compromise that people choose for the look of the room, and it is a legitimate choice — as long as it is made with the temperature reading in hand and the neck angle calculated, not decided in the store.
If you are doing it anyway
- Run the heat test and write the numbers down.
- Confirm the fireplace manufacturer’s clearances.
- Choose the smallest screen the room can live with — it lowers the screen center.
- Buy a tilting mount at minimum, or a pull-down if the budget and the structure allow.
- Verify the wall structure and the veneer thickness before you buy anchors.
- Sort power and signal before the TV goes up, not after.
- Mock the size up in cardboard and sit with it for a day. How high to mount a TV explains the test.

When it’s worth calling someone
Fireplace walls combine the two things that most often go wrong — uncertain structure and heat you cannot see — and they are the installs where a bad call is expensive in a television rather than in drywall. Is it bad to mount a TV above a fireplace?
Usually, yes, for two reasons. Heat rising off the firebox can exceed the ambient temperature the TV is rated to operate in, and the mounting height puts the screen well above comfortable eye level so you look up for the whole film. Both problems can be managed, but neither goes away on its own, and if you can put the TV on another wall you should.
How hot is too hot for a TV above a fireplace?

The air reading is the one that matters most, because it is what the TV lives in.
Do pull-down TV mounts above a fireplace actually work?
They solve the viewing angle well. The TV parks flat above the mantel and pulls down and forward to eye level to watch. They do not solve heat, since the TV still spends most of its life sitting in the rising warm air. They are also heavy, expensive, and demand serious structural anchoring, so read the manufacturer's requirements before buying.
Can I mount a TV on a stone or tile fireplace surround?
Only if the anchors reach real structure behind the veneer. Thin stone, tile and manufactured stone veneer are a finish over a mortar bed and lath, not a structural material, and they will not hold a TV on their own. You need longer fasteners into the framing or the masonry behind, and you need to drill the veneer carefully to avoid cracking it.
How do I run power to a TV above a fireplace?
Often you cannot do it the easy way. There is usually no receptacle up there, and the chase behind a masonry or stone fireplace is frequently solid or blocked by the flue. The realistic options are a paintable raceway, or a licensed electrician adding a receptacle. Never run a TV power cord through a wall cavity, which the electrical code does not permit.
